10 quick knitting projects
for beginners

Cast on something you will actually wear.

KEEP THESE NOTES CLOSE AT HAND.

The best beginner project is the one you actually finish. Here are ten that are fast, forgiving, and genuinely useful — each paired with the LITLG yarn we would choose for it.

01 — RIBBED HEADBAND

Knit flat in 2×2 rib, seamed at the back. One of the fastest satisfying projects you can make. Yarn: Sport SW Merino.

02 — SIMPLE COWL

Cast on in the round, knit in rib until desired length, cast off. No shaping, no seaming, just rhythm. Yarn: Our Aran weight merino — one skein is plenty.

03 — GARTER STITCH SCARF

Knit every row, let the rhythm settle in, end up with something genuinely beautiful. Yarn: Singles SW Merino — the drape is extraordinary.

04 — EASY HAT

Knit in the round in simple rib or stockinette, with a straightforward crown decrease. One skein, one afternoon. Yarn: Aran weight merino.

05 — TRIANGLE SHAWL

Increase on every right-side row until desired size, then cast off. Perfect for learning to read your knitting. Yarn: Singles SW Merino — one or two skeins.

06 — FINGERLESS MITTS

An ideal introduction to working in the round and simple thumb gussets. Once you can knit a mitt, socks feel achievable. Yarn: Sport SW Merino.

07 — WRIST WARMERS

Even simpler than fingerless mitts — a tube of rib with a thumb hole. Knit two in an evening. Yarn: DK Twist — the structure makes the rib pop beautifully.

08 — YOUR FIRST SOCK

Daunting in prospect, deeply satisfying in practice. Start with a simple cuff-down pattern — or follow our beginner sock pattern on the blog. Yarn: Fine Sock SW Merino — 100g per pair.

09 — EASY RAGLAN SWEATER

Once you have made a hat, a cowl and some mitts, you are ready. A top-down raglan in one piece with no seaming is the perfect first sweater. Yarn: Sport SW Merino or our Aran weight.

10 — GARTER STITCH SQUARE

Cast on, knit until square, cast off. Simple enough that you can focus entirely on tension and technique. Beautiful enough to give as a gift. Yarn: DK or Aran in a soft, natural colourway.

Before you start: winding your yarn

Most yarn — including ours — comes in a hank (a loose loop) rather than a ball ready to knit straight from. Before you cast on you’ll need to wind it into a cake or ball, otherwise it’ll tangle the moment you start pulling from it.

You have a few options:

  • Pop into your local yarn shop. Most are happy to wind a hank for you on the spot — especially if you’ve bought from them. It takes them two minutes and saves you the hassle.
  • Buy a swift and ball winder. A basic umbrella swift (holds the hank open) and a cheap ball winder (winds it into a neat flat cake) costs around €30–€40 combined and makes the whole process satisfying and quick.
  • Use the back of a chair. Loop the hank over a chair back to keep it open, then wind by hand into a ball. It takes a little longer but works perfectly well for the odd skein.

Whichever you choose, wind loosely — winding too tightly stretches the yarn and can affect your tension.
