How much Yarn?

How Much Yarn Do I Need? A Knitter’s Guide by Weight and Project

For most adult projects, a rough guide is:

  • one average pair of socks needs about 350–450 yards (320–410 m) of fingering-weight yarn;
  • a shawl needs 400–1,200 yards (370–1,100 m);
  • an adult sweater needs 900–2,200 yards (820–2,000 m), depending on yarn weight and size. The finer the yarn, the more yards a project takes. Always buy enough for the whole project at once, plus one extra skein as a buffer.

The exact amount depends on three things: the project, the yarn weight, and your size or finished dimensions. Use the tables to estimate, then confirm against your pattern.

Buying enough hand-dyed yarn (important)

Hand-dyed yarn is dyed in small batches, so colour can vary slightly between dye lots. To avoid a visible shift mid-project:

  • Buy all the yarn for one project at the same time, from the same dye lot where possible.
  • Buy one extra skein. Running out and having to match a new lot later is the most common hand-dyed pitfall.
  • Alternate skeins when working larger pieces. Knitting two rounds from one skein, then two from another, blends any subtle differences so they disappear into the fabric.

At LITLG, every skein is hand-dyed in small batches, so we recommend ordering a project’s full quantity together. Each yarn’s exact yardage is listed on its product page — check it against the estimates above, and size up a skein if your project sits near the top of a range.

How many yards are in a skein?

Yarn quantity is measured in length (yards or metres), not weight, because different fibres weigh differently. A typical 100 g skein holds roughly:

440–875

400–800

Fingering/sock

To work out how many skeins you need, divide the project’s total yardage by the yards per skein, then round up. Example: a 1,400-yard DK sweater ÷ 280 yards per skein = 5 skeins, so buy 6 to be safe.
