Life in the Long Grass grew from a simple love of colour, wool, and the quiet rhythm of making things by hand. Founded by Caroline Niland, the studio took root after she and her family restored a once-derelict, hundred-year-old farmhouse at the foot of Mushermore Mountain — surrounded by wild heather, blanket bog, and big Irish skies. This place shapes everything we do: how we work, how we slow down, and how we care for our craft.
We choose our yarns with intention, sourcing from small, ethical farms in Ireland, England, Uruguay, Peru, Argentina, France, and Portugal. All of our wool is mulesing-free, because kindness to animals matters to us as much as a beautiful fibre.
Every skein is dyed with patience and a genuine love of the process. We take our time, lean into the small rituals of the dye pots, and aim for quiet consistency without rushing the magic. It’s slow, considered work — and that’s exactly how we like it.
Our studio is light-filled and full of fresh air by design — a calm, comfortable space for our small team of dyers and packers, plus the studio cat and two dogs who supervise.
Colour is built up carefully, using non-toxic acid dyes, low-impact fibre-reactive dyes, and natural dyes, finished with a food-grade setting agent. A double-setting process keeps colours true and bleed-free, and we recycle our water to keep waste to a minimum. That same care runs through to our packaging and labels, made from recycled kraft paper, and our printed publications, on recycled stock.
We dye across a wide range of bases — superwash and non-superwash, woollen-spun and worsted-spun — to suit whatever you’re making, from next-to-skin shawls to hard-wearing socks and sweaters.
You’ll find our yarn in our online shop, and in local yarn stores around the world. We always love welcoming new retailers — for wholesale, just say hello at stephanie@litlg.com.
